The fragmented and patchy urban structure of the town of Naters, where recognizable urban orientation elements are scarce, led us to propose a compact typology capable of establishing a sense of a complete urban structure. This approach was taken despite the competition brief, which called for a phased development composed of separate volumes.
The proposed pattern is based on a rigid and orderly grid of equilateral triangles which, in their volumetric development, gradually lose their rigidity to gain a formal richness. This richness plays with scale, ranging from an urban character—expressed through large gateways—to a more human scale, thanks to the articulation of the volumes and the interplay of solid and transparent elements.
The resulting architecture offers a strong yet inviting urban presence, and features a contemplative courtyard that takes full advantage of its southern orientation.
